A striking antique marble fireplace surround in richly figured grey marble, embellished with finely carved, contrasting white statuary marble neoclassical ornament.

The frieze is centred by a carved floral patera, flanked by finely carved fruiting laurel branches tied with crossed ribbons. The laurel motif is repeated to each jamb, suspended from carved rings and complemented by further classical ornament to the corner blocks.

The dark grey marble is beautifully veined throughout, including areas of warm golden marking, providing a dramatic backdrop to the pale statuary marble and emphasising the quality and intricacy of the carved detail.

A very opulent piece with strong neoclassical influences, dating from the late 19th century.
