Antique French Louis XV Style Statuary Marble Fireplace with Brass Mounts

A very rare and highly decorative antique French Louis XV style chimneypiece in fine white statuary marble, enriched with elaborate applied brass mounts in the Rococo manner.

The large serpentine marble shelf rests above a shaped frieze, centred by an impressive brass cartouche of scrolling acanthus leaves and foliate ornament, with delicate trailing floral sprays extending to either side. Below, the generously proportioned opening.

The shaped and panelled jambs are embellished with substantial brass acanthus leaf mounts, complemented by further foliate ornament at the foot of each jamb. The richly modelled brasswork provides a striking contrast against the white statuary marble.

A beautiful example of French Rococo Revival design, combining graceful architectural proportions with richly detailed ornamentation. This impressive chimneypiece would make a magnificent focal point.

The surround has been gently restored, please see all images and video for the condition.
